Facebook backing down to the Australian government shows the company's bold move, which “triggered a huge backlash” across the world, was a mistake, according to Sky News host Chris Kenny.

The global tech giant has announced it will restore access to Australian news pages on its platform in the coming days.

The move comes after the Morrison government announced it will introduce a number of amendments to its media bargaining code.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg spoke to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg several times over the last two days, seeking to get the tech giant back to the negotiating table after it announced the banning of Australian news content from its platform.

“The government held firm against a giant global monopoly and has won out,” Mr Kenny said.
