Trial for detained Canadian Michael Kovrig ends in Beijing, verdict to be announced later

Frustration from Canadian officials mounts as the trial of Michael Kovrig, one of two Canadians detained in China over spying charges, ended on Monday with the verdict to be announced at an unspecified later date.

Kovrig’s trial, which has been ongoing for more than three hours, comes three days after the trial of Michael Spavor — another Canadian being detained in China. The case of the "Two Michaels" has been a wedge issue between China and Canada ever since the two men were detained.

Spavor’s trial ended without a verdict after a two-hour deliberation on Friday.

Kovrig and Spavor were both detained in 2018 in what is widely believed to be retaliation for Canada’s arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in on extradition charges to the United States.

Abigail Bimman reports.
